My story...
Moving to the edge of a wilderness area in Nova Scotia inspired me to find out more about the ecology of where I live. This exploration has propelled the imagery within the designs you find here. While my art studio practice is quiet and subtle, venturing into pattern design has offered me a place to play with colour and movement.

My maternal grandmother's middle name was Muriel. She was a place of refuge during storming times and her gentle and an assuming ways gave me great comfort. Muriel is Irish / Scot Gaelic name and ties me to to my roots. It also means "star of the sea" , "sparkling sea" or "shining sea". So in my return to the edge of the sea after 14 years of living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, this is a fitting celebration of both place and person.
In my efforts to be both a maker and part of the ecology of where I live, I try to be considerate of both my materials and who I partner with. I use Marmoleum as my matrix, the block I carve into. This product is made from 90% renewable materials and the key ingredient is linseed oil made from the seeds of flax. The ink I choose to use when proofing is AKUA ink. Made by a couple in NY when they decided to bring a baby into their lives and home studio. This product is made from soy based and is non toxic to the environment. These two products are important to me as the bits of marmoleum from my carvings and the inks I wash up don't go away, they stay here, in our ecosystem.
When I am not out kayaking, exploring the wild flora and wet mosses and lichens of this place you can find me teaching courses at NSCAD University and making work in my home studio. (find that work at www.carriephillipskieser.com) |
